Forum Post: ADS1115: Research ADC for precise measurement Volts 4 lithium batteries

Part Number: ADS1115 Tool/software: Hi everyone. I'm looking for a simple to use chip that allows me to read only the precise voltages of 4 lithium batteries in series with each other (in 4S configuration as shown in the image) I'm looking for a high precision ADC that allows me to only take voltage readings on 4 lithium cells placed in series (in 4S configuration as shown in the image) and that communicates with the ESP32 through the i2c protocol. It is difficult to find a chip that only does what I require (for example, I have seen that these functions are present in battery charging chips, but since they are already in an advanced stage of the project it would mean having to start from the beginning with a good part of the work); so it could be that what you suggest also has other features, but if there was something that was limited to just doing what I need it would be excellent because the size and complexity of the package would be reduced. I have now tried with an ADS1115 module which is 16bit, the problem is that its use to read the battery voltages is necessarily linked to voltage dividers and for other factors I need the Battery- to coincide with the GND of the whole rest of the system. Currently the ADS1115 that I use is composed as follows but, I think due to the dividers (although all resistors are 0.1%) the voltage readings are not so precise compared to those read on the voltmeter (for example 16.72V on the voltmeter appears to be on the 'ADS1115 16.56V) and this with lithium battery is not a good thing as they are batteries for which you have to be careful of the voltages involved. Do you have any other suggestions for getting the 4 accurate battery measurements? Thank you Gaggero

Forum Post: ADS127L21: ADS127L21: AC voltage measurement

Part Number: ADS127L21 Tool/software: Hello, I have a few questions about the ADS127L21. 1) Was it written in the evaluation board datasheet and the ADS127L21 datasheet that internal clock is not recommended for AC voltage measurement. But we tested it with the evaluation board using a unipolar signal of 500mV AC with a 1.65V DC offset. we readed this signal. In what situations is this expression valid for AC voltage. When measuring a 1.65VDC offset and a 500mVAC signal, would we encounter any unexpected ADC AC voltge measurement with internal clock. 2) Do we need to measure the clock when applying an external clock to the ADC? Do SCLK and the external clock need to be synchronized? Because the datasheet states the following: 'Minimize phase skew between SCLK and CLK (< 5ns)'. I didn't fully understand this statement, what is the reason for it? I would appreciate a quick reply. thank you

Hi Jagir Mehta1, Thanks for your patience, I was out of the office during the last week And thanks for confirming that the ADC is working correctly. This means that there is an issue with your setup. Can you tell me what voltages you are measuring at AIN1 and AIN0 in your original setup below? Please measure them with respect to ground (AVSS) on the ADC. -Bryan

Thank you for the quick reply. I was going through the datasheet and in the Data Retrieval section, I found the following part. Does this relate to multiple data read over DMA in a single transaction or something else? From what I understand, DAISY_EN should be used when multiple ADS1198 devices are connected, allowing simultaneous retrieval of conversion data from all of them. The ADS1194/6/8 also provide a multiple readback feature. The data can be read out multiple times by simply giving more SCLKs, in which case the MSB data byte repeats after reading the last byte. The DAISY_EN bit in CONFIG1 register must be set to '1' for multiple readbacks.

Hi Katlynne, thanks for the quick response. All of them are out of TI stock and also hard to get at other suppliers. Are those components anywhere near their End-of-Life cycle? A 4-channel DAC would also be fine if its active and continued for at least a few years... All the best, Markus

Hi Bryan, The Vrms value is checked. At 40ksps, the datasheet value is about 1.8, but the actual measured value was about 2.5. At other sampling rates, the values were the same as on the data sheet. Regards, Ryu.

HI Angel. Thanks for your answer. So as a voltmeter I used both the Tacklife (which has never missed a beat and therefore seems strange to me) and the recently calibrated Fluke that we have in the company and for both the values differed very little. So you're saying that I will have to calibrate the ADS1115 by putting a formula in it that gives me the value returned by the ADS1115 equal to that read by the voltmeter? So for example by inserting a constant? That is, if the voltmeter reads 16.72V and the ADS1115 reads 16.56V will I have to multiply 16.56V x 1.0096618357... to ensure that it gives me the real value? You mean this? But will the result be linear for all values? That is, if the ADS1115 gives me 15.02V in the future, does it mean that it really will have 15.02V or could it mean that perhaps in reality I have 14.96 or another value due to a non-linearity of the ADC?

Hi Kadeem, This simulation graph seems to show that the total phase noise is only due to the PLL, more particularly below 1 KHz. The phase noise of the reference is not displayed on this graph, difficult to know if the close-in phase noise is due to the PLL or the reference but the close-in phase noise slope (about 10 dB/decade) does not seem to be the one of a 10 MHz reference... Thus, if this phase noise is really due to the PLL, it means that this part will not be the good one in order to comply with the phase noise needs. Alain

Forum Post: ADS114S08B: How to circuit design for 4x 2-wire PT1000 RTD

Part Number: ADS114S08B Tool/software: Hi guys. I would like to use the ADS114S08B to apply four indipendent 2-wire PT1000 RTD. I would like to use the circuit that show in Figure 2-9 on SBAA275A (the image is visible below). I need to measure the temperature from -40°C to +220°C with PT1000 sensors. This means to have RTDmin=842.7Ohm (-40°C) and RTDmax=1831.9Ohm (+220°C). I set the IDAC to 250uA because the current suggest to flow into the PT1000 that I choose is from 100uA to 300uA. With this current value, the maximum voltage across one PT1000 is VRTD_MAX=IDAC*RTD_MAX=250uA*1831.9Ohm=458mV. Now I don't undestand which is the correct value of the PGA gain that i set. How can I choose this? 1 it's OK? 2? 4? After that, the VREFMIN is VREFMIN=PGA gain*VRTD_MAX and we took the 10% margin, so VREF=1.1*VREFMIN. With VREF value I can calculate the RREF with: RREF=VREF/IDAC. Is it correct? The second step is to calculate the correct value of the R-C filter to the ADC inputs. Can you explait to me the method to calculate the correct values of the R-C filters? Thanks. Gabriele.

Hi Dale, The stand-alone tool ADS126X-CALC-TOOL has hex-code to voltage equation for single-ended ADC reading, right ? Because in your response you have explained that FSR = 2 * Vref / Gain and LSB = FSR / 2^(32-1) for ADC1, While in sheet LSB = Vref / (Gain * 2^(32-1). In both the formula there is significance difference. Please correct my understanding.

Part Number: ADS1261 Tool/software: Hi, We are in the final stage of finalizing the code for ADS1261 and it is going unresponsive after some time. It is used in pulse conversion mode with single ended operation, with -2.5 to 2.5 power rails and internal reference. SINC1 filter and 1200 SPS. After reading a single channel we select next channel to continue processing. The system is set to read from ADC after interrupt from DRDY pin/ During the selection of channel it fails, there is a while loop to continuously try. while ( ads1261SelectChannel ( pdToChannel [ current_pd ])) { PRINTF ( "[ADS1261] Channel select failed .... retrying \n\r " ); ads1261SendCommand ( OPCODE_STOP ); ads1261SendCommand ( OPCODE_RESET ); ads1261Init (); msDelay ( 50 ); } EnableIRQ ( ADS1261_DATA_READY_IRQ ); What could be the possible reasons and a way to fix this? Thank you and best regards Samyak
