Forum Post: TLV2556 absolute max clarification

We are using the TLV2556IPW (ADC) in one of our designs.

The design will have a small power sequencing change to correct a problem with another device and I need to ensure I am interpreting your datasheet correctly since some people disagree with me.

In particular, in the Absolute Maximum Ratings section the TLV2556IPW datasheet says max input voltage on any input is Vcc+0.3V.

Then a few lines later it says peak input current on any input is +/-20mA.

I have always interpreted a spec like this to mean that you can Violate the voltage spec so long as the current spec is not violated because the voltage is only slightly violated as the ESD diodes are forward biased.

In our design during power up there is a higher voltage on one of the analog inputs before Vcc and Ref+ (tied together) come up.

It lasts about 1ms.

The current during this time is about 7mA but the voltage will probably exceed Vcc+0.3V as the ESD diode starts conducting.

Is this condition OK for your ADC?
