Forum Post: RE: ADS1232 with +24V load cell excitation

Hi Jayaraj,

The quick answer is you cannot directly connect the sensor outputs to the ADS1232.  If you excite a bridge sensor with 24V, the balanced state for the bridge + and - inputs will be approximately 1/2 of the excitation, or 12V with respect to AGND.  This exceeds the absolute maximum specification for the analog inputs of AVDD +0.3V (5.3V).  It also exceeds the common mode input range where the specified analog input must be between AGND+1.5V and AVDD-1.5V for gains of 64 and 128.

To use the output from a sensor with 24V excitation you will need to level shift the differential output down to within the correct input range.  There are many different ways to do this with differential or instrumentation amplifiers that include the possibility for adding gain as well.  The problems with adding amplifier stages will be the increase of noise and drift, and the measurement will not be ratiometric.

Best regards,

Bob B
