Make sure the VIO supply used on the EVM is compatible with the logic level of your PIC. The EVM has the option to use onboard 3.3V or 1.8V supplies, or you can connect an external supply. The data for all of the resolution variants is aligned left in the data register, so you can write 12-bit data to the DAC81616 part, and it will act as a 12-bit device. Alternatively, if you can write 16-bit data to the 12-bit part, the lower 4 bits will be ignored by the device. This makes it easy to have compatible code between the different resolution devices.
